Ecoset Sustainable Shoot Case Study For Doordash

Case Studies are a great way to see how people get Green done.

This pre-Covid report shows the impact data when Ecoset consultancy partnered with Rattling Stick and the Martin Agency on a commercial shoot for Doordash.

A ZERO WASTE PRODUCTION:

Zero Waste is defined as 90% or greater diversion from landfill. This is achieved through waste prevention and materials diversion.

In alignment with Zero Waste standards, crew and talent participated in recycling and composting solutions, and refilled reusable water bottles at water stations.

This is possible when source reduction, waste diversion strategies and direct supervision are included in the budget and overall production plan, feasible even with large crews and scenic builds.

REDIRECTION OF THE REUSABLE:

With EcoSet’s Zero Waste diversion process, reusable materials are salvaged from set as an alternative to dumpster disposal. These items are recirculated to the local community at EcoSet’s Materials Oasis reuse facility in Los Angeles.

Scenic builds, custom props, reusable creative materials, set dressing, wardrobe and expendables are donated to local organizations and individuals. Reusable production items are available at no cost to schools, non-profits, theaters, filmmakers, artists, camps, parks and many others.

FEEDING OTHERS WITH SURPLUS:

Under the protection of the Federal Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, EcoSet donated surplus food styling ingredients. Non-profit recipients accept liability, inspect the food, and serve the meals to their constituents as part of hunger relief programs.

The caterer for the DoorDash production donated surplus catering food to their own internal network of employees and their families.

FOOD SERVICE PRODUCTS BENEFIT NON-PROFITS:

EcoSet collected surplus food packaging items on set and recirculated them to the local community. Various non-profits picked up these resources from EcoSet’s Materials Oasis reuse center. These cost saving items can be used for creative projects or as part of food service programs.

“EcoSet was an excellent partner to reduce our waste on set. As an agency, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and we encourage our clients and partners to do the same. Production can be a wasteful industry – from props, to set design, to craft services - we wanted to know that we were doing all we could to reduce that waste. The staff on set was knowledgeable, thoughtful, and felt like an extension of the crew. It was great to see the impact live with composting and recycling and know we were also supporting the local community.”

THE FINAL BREAKDOWN :

Were there any unexpected challenges when it came to employing the sustainability guidelines?

The Covid Protocols of this shoot definitely required us to adapt our sustainability kit. We did this by creating a bespoke waste diversion and reduction program and working with vendors to follow the new AICP safety protocols.

What did you learn from the experience

Safety and sustainability are mutually beneficial. With the right vendor partners, an influx in PPE waste can be almost completely avoided. Tactics for this include providing comfortable, long wear washable/ reusable masks and encouraging water bottle usage, which can save literally POUNDS of single waste PPE from landfill.

With a little coaching on bin usage at the start of the shoot, the entire crew ended up commenting on the cleanliness of the shoot in tandem with the covid compliance team.

What resources did you use that you’d like to recommend?

Individually Wrapped Utensil Kits from Leafware adhere to new COVID protocols while maintaining compostable standards. A life saver in this time.

Clear & Labeled Resource Bags help with easy sorting and encourage participation on set.

Sanitary Water Bottles by Vapur are perfect for set. Between the fill and drink opening being separate (very sanitary), the belt clip provides the perfect convenience for on the go hydration.

A biodegradable and effective hand sanitizer in a spray function, like Elyptol is great for fast paced sets, great smell and a crowd pleaser.

Reusable Masks— Henry makes comfortable recycled 3 ply polypropylene with comfortable straps and breathability that works  well for long sets.
